My unemployed father sent me a forwarded email about “an economics professor at a local college” teaching his class why Obama’s socialism doesn’t work. He told his class that every student will get the same grade, the average of the entire class. After the first test, the average grade was a B. Most students were happy with the grade except for those students who had earned an A. After that, the students who had studied little studied even less because they thought they would get a good grade regardless. The good students studied less because they couldn’t get an A no matter how hard they studied. By the third test, the average grade was an F. There was a lot of finger-pointing and arguing and I heard a white girl was raped by a black man. (That last bit was added free of charge. You’re welcome, Republicans.)

This story is called an urban legend, but it is being gleefully forwarded by right wing halfwits (some of them in my own family!) as proof that the free market works. In their minds, work hard and get an A. You would think my unemployed father would know better.

Let me present a more accurate model for how the free market is currently working. If your great-grandfather went to that college, you get an A. Otherwise, you are graded on a curve where the highest grade is a D.
